Finally, the little boy fishing on the moon has reached Pixar heights of brilliance. It’s actually a shame that Dragons had to be nominated in a year when its unlikely to win, because its a film that deserves to take home some sort of award. Indeed, the flying sequences are so breathtaking and the ‘friendship montage’ so heart warming that you won’t stop to notice that the kids’ accents are american whilst the adult Vikings are Scottish (?). But for the first time since Shrek you can feel a heart beating behind the spectacular 3D animation. The plot beats feel undoubtedly familiar and the Father-Son relationship issues could have come from just about any animated film from the last 10 years. It eschews the utterly vapid pop culture references and clumsy, caricature-reliant comedy that has plagued previous efforts from the studio (the Shrek sequels, Madagascar etc.) and instead focuses on story, and it pays off handsomely. Not since, well, ever have Dreamworks produced a story this compelling or moving. Telling the story of a rather hopeless young Viking who is better at inventing than fighting, where Dragons excels is in the tender way the story of his relationship with the dragon, Toothless, develops.

Each film is actually an excellent piece of cinema in their own respect, making this one of the strongest categories of the year.ĭreamworks’ How To Train Your Dragon is the weakest of the lot, yet it is still a fine film. The three films nominated this year are: The Illusionist by Sylvain Chomet How To Train Your Dragon by De Blois and Sanders Toy Story 3 by Lee Unkrich.

So I’ve decided to get in there first and look at the three films nominated for the Best Animated Feature category, as well as using this time to lament the general under-appreciation of what this column celebrates. Hope Lies at 24 Frames Per Second recently contributed to LAMB’s Oscar anticipation with a look at Inception and why Blockbusters are often overlooked, and it will undoubtedly have more to say as the big night (Feb 27th, awards hounds) draws ever nearer. The Academy Awards are fast approaching, and so it is with a sense of inevitability that film websites from the big to the small are going to start posting articles on the academy awards, championing some films whilst slamming others and generally adding to the sense of expectation that surrounds the awards season.
